Ayurveda – the Indian Art of Healing

Ayurveda, the ancient “Science of Life” is one of the oldest health care form in the world. Its emphasis is to prevent illness and to maintain harmony of body, mind and spirit.

According to Ayurveda, physical illness and emotional imbalances are the reasons of disharmony in body and soul. To enjoy good health is to maintain or restore personal equilibrium. We are and remain healthy if we keep a balance between us and the outer influences. That includes our personal and health related constitution, the day of the week and the season we are in, the climate and the place of residence, our working conditions, our social relationships and, last but not least, the food we eat.

The concept of the three Doshas is the heart of Ayurveda. They are the different types of human constitution which are acquired at birth and will not change through life. They are:

VATA, either and air: Vata is dry, mobile, light, cold and changeable. It is responsible for all movement and the most powerful of the Doshas and the strongest to create disease. Imbalances of this dosha can contribute to weight loss, arthritis, constipation, restlessness, weakness and digestive problems.

PITTA, fire and water: Pitta is sharp, hot, acidic and fluid. It governs heat and temperature in the body. When out of balance, one could experience heartburn, skin rashes, excessive body heat and indigestion.

KAPHA, water and earth: Kapha is heavy, slow, dull, wet, solid and oily. When Kapha is out of balance, it may contribute to weight gain, excessive sleep, asthma and depression

Panchakarma is a holistic system of healing that incorporates the mind, body and spirit

Panchakarma is unique in a sense that it meets individual needs according to constitutional imbalances. There are three phases of Panchakarma:

  1. The first stage prepares the body to get rid of ama (toxins) by saturating the body with oil internally with ghee and externally through Abhyanga, which consists of an oil application over the whole body with medicated oil.
  2. The second phase consists in different therapies to make the body sweat which will delate the channels for the removal of the doshas.  Shirodhara is part of this second phase which is extremely relaxing, nourishes the nervous system and improves mental clarity.
  3. The third phase of Panchakarma is aimed at assisting the body to reestablish metabolic system and immunity.
