Ayurveda and the Skin

The skin is our body’s largest organ and has many responsibilities. If our skin receives an overload of toxins from the environment and health, it will impact its glow and luster. However, the skin can periodically cleanse and rejuvenate itself.

According to the Ayurveda text, whatever is inside the body is also on the outside.  The skins overall health is enhanced when the five elements are balanced and restored at the deepest level.

The Five Elements (Panchamahabhutas) are:

Earth forms the basis of skin structure and thickness.

Water is responsible for moisture balance in the skin. It’s important to drink clean, warm water daily to maintain this element.

Air contributes to the circulation in the skin. It is the most dynamic element. Cleansing within the system will happen with the exchange of good, clean air.

Fire gives the skin its glow, luster, metabolism and warmth. Maintaining the element of fire will take care of your mental and physical wellbeing. Simply get some sunlight daily.

Space. We feel flexible and open-minded accepting changes and challenges with ease. We feel connected to the earth and physically and emotionally nourished.

We are currently in the season of Vata, which goes from early fall to mid-winter. A cool and dry wind is ever so present, stripping the leaves from the trees and air moves in all directions.

This will cause our skin to become dry from cold winds and heated homes. It’s important that in this season, we focus on balancing the five elements.
