![]() According to Ayurveda, we are now moving into the season of Kapha which extends from late winter into spring. When Kapha is balanced, one feels grounded, stabil, with lots of stamina and a feeling of contentment. During the wintertime, one tends to eat more heavy and oily foods in order to stay warm, one might move less and gain a few pounds which makes us feel heavy and sluggish. The warm spring weather can “melt” the extra Kapha we accumulated during the winter and flow through our body as well as the mind and cause imbalances such as: Physical and mental dullness. Spring allergies, congestion, colds and coughs Flu symptoms Mucus build up in the respiratory tract Extra body weight Difficulty to wake up in the morning Indigestion |
By following a simple springtime routine, the above symptoms could decrease significantly. Get up early and spend some time outside, maybe go for an early walk, even if it’s short, to breathe in the fresh morning air to reduce stress and promote clarity. As Kapha dosha is aggravated during spring time, avoid deep fried and oily foods, cold drinks, ice cream. Ayurveda recommends adding lemon, ginger, turmeric and black pepper to the diet, as they detox and stimulate. To reduce spring time congestion, reduce dairy products. It you drink cow’s milk, add some turmeric, cumin or ginger to make it more digestable. Choose light, easy digestable meals and add some spices. Seasonal vegetables and herbs, fresh fruit and healthy grains are recommended. Avoid day sleep as it increases Kapha and can decrease the metabolism. Exercise is a must! A Kichari cleanse is recommended. Please let me know if you are interested and I will guide you. Spring is a good time to declutter, not only our body and mind, but our surroundings, our physical space, as well. There are a number of Ayurveda herbs and formulations available for support in your spring routine. Please ask an Ayurveda practicioner for help in choosing the right one for you. |
