Enhance your Immunity with Ayurveda

As the winter sets in and cold temperatures and dry air dominate, many people connect the season with colds, coughs, flu and other contagious illnesses. Winter is considered the season when our immunity decreases and we feel unwell quite often.

Ayurveda however has many ways to strenghten the immunity for you to stay well and healthy throughout the winter.

Various factors affect the immunity such as diet, lifestyle, season, and age. We can maintain a consistent level of immunity throughout any ups and downs in life by adapting our diet and lifestyle.

A healthy and robust immune system can protect us from disease causing pathogens and the risk of developing severe symptoms.

There are three levels of immunity in Ayurveda:

Sahajam: Immunity we are born with. This refers to the natural disease fighting strength and capabilities of the human body.

Kalajam: It is dependent on seasonal changes and age.

Yukthikritham: Acquired immunity by proper diet, lifestyle, rest, exercise and rejuvenation therapies.

Below are some tips to keep you healthy throughout the winter season:

DietEat warm food like healthy grains, lightly spiced stews and soups. Incorporate warming herbs and spices like ginger, garlic, black pepper, turmeric, cinnamon, cloves and cumin.
Cold dishes and drinks as well as oily, very sweet and heavy foods can have an adverse effect on the immune system.

Rest: The nights are long and the days are short so give your body enough rest. Try to go to sleep no later than 10 pm and get up early for a healthy routine.
Enjoy a cup of Golden Milk before sleep.

Reduce stress: Enjoy a planned and organized daily routine. Winter is the season which helps us to slow down and which can greatly reduce stress, anxiety and confusion.

Exercise: Get outdoors on a daily walk, if possible during sunlight. The stimulation of daily exercise counters the sluggishness which can arise in the cold of winter.

Yoga: According to Ayurveda, yoga asanas are the ideal form of exercise for all body types and ages, because they balance the three doshas, tone the muscles, and rejuvenate all the organs in the body.
Pranayam, or breathing exercises, are also good for restoring balance to mind and body.
